In February this year, the Russian National Youth Symphony Orchestra debuted at the Great Hall of the Moscow Conservatory. Together with Julian Rachlin and Denis Matsuev the young musicians performed Tchaikovsky's First Piano Concerto and Fifth Symphony. The documentary “Tchaikovsky in Moscow – Julian Rachlin & Denis Matsuev” was dedicated to the debut of the RNYSO on the legendary stage. It was premiered on October 26 on the German TV channel ARTE.
The film shows fragments of the rehearsal of Tchaikovsky's First Concerto. The music awakens nostalgic memories in Matsuev – of a childhood sweetheart and of the occasion when he played this concerto before an audience for the first time. “I was probably the happiest boy in the world,” he says. And together with Julian Rachlin, the viewers will travel to the south of Moscow, where his friends – also musicians – live, and will go on a nocturnal sleigh ride with them.
Both the film and the video recording of the concert will soon be available in the video catalogue of the Moscow Philharmonic.
